LinkedIn video messages

How to send a video message on LinkedIn from your laptop

By Tirth Shah, founder of Bub · Updated

Short answer

LinkedIn doesn't let you record a video inside a chat on desktop. You can attach a video file you recorded somewhere else, or paste a Loom link, which sends people to another site. To record your camera, your screen or both and have it play right inside the LinkedIn DM, add Bub, a free Chrome extension that puts a video recorder in LinkedIn's message box.

Add Bub to Chrome, it's free

Links are the weak spot. A link to a video page asks the other person to leave LinkedIn and trust a URL from someone they may not know yet. A video that plays in the chat is one tap, right where they're already reading.

How to record and send a LinkedIn video message with Bub

  1. Add Bub to Chrome. Install Bub from the Chrome Web Store. It's free and also works in Edge, Brave and Arc, on Mac and Windows.
  2. Open a LinkedIn chat. Go to any conversation on linkedin.com, or start a new message.
  3. Open the recorder. Click the Bub button in the message box and pick Video, or press ⌘⇧Y on Mac (Ctrl+Shift+Y on Windows).
  4. Pick what to record. Choose your camera, your screen, or your screen with your face in a bubble. Allow camera and microphone access the first time.
  5. Record, review, send. Record up to 15 minutes, watch it back, then send. It arrives as a native LinkedIn video that plays inside the conversation.

Long videos take LinkedIn a few minutes to process before they send. Keep the tab open until the message shows as sent.

When a video beats a voice note or text

  • When showing beats telling: a quick walkthrough of their website, their profile or your product.
  • When you want them to see you: a 30 second face-to-camera hello builds trust faster than a paragraph.
  • When you're answering a question that would take five messages to type.
  • For a voice-only note, use a LinkedIn voice message instead: it's faster to record and quicker to play.

Tips for LinkedIn video messages that get watched

  • Keep it short. Under a minute is easy to say yes to; save longer walkthroughs for people who asked.
  • Say their name in the first seconds and show something that's obviously about them.
  • Add one line of text with the video, so they know why it's worth playing.
  • End with one easy question, not a calendar link.

Questions

Can you send a video message on LinkedIn?

Yes. LinkedIn messages can carry videos, which play inside the chat. What LinkedIn doesn't have on desktop is a way to record one in the chat. Bub, a free Chrome extension, adds that recorder.

Is Bub like Loom for LinkedIn?

Close, with one difference: there's no link. Bub records your camera, screen or both and sends it as a native LinkedIn video that plays inside the DM, so nobody has to click out to another site.

How long can a LinkedIn video message be?

Bub records up to 15 minutes. Longer videos take LinkedIn a few minutes to process before they send, and shorter ones get watched more.

Can I record my screen and my face together?

Yes. Pick screen recording with the camera bubble and your face sits in a corner of the video while you talk through what's on screen.

Is Bub free?

Yes. The Bub extension is free forever, with unlimited voice notes, videos and snippets. Bub Pro, an optional keyboard-first inbox for your LinkedIn messages, has a 14-day free trial.

Which browsers and computers does it work on?

Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc, on Mac and Windows.
